Blood Cancer Lawsuit Settlements

Edwin Hardeman was awarded $80 Million by a jury earlier this year for the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma following years of Roundup usage. The couple also received $2 billion, however, this award was later reduced.

Bayer acquired Monsanto in the past year, but it lost a case brought by a groundskeeper from a school who claimed that Monsanto's herbicide was responsible for the cancer in his body. The new agreement does not admit responsibility or guilt.

Benzene

Benzene occurs naturally in crude oils and is also produced by the gasoline industry. It is a volatile chemical that may be inhaled, absorbed through skin or evaporated quickly. It is used to produce rubber, plastics, dyes, lubricants, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. It is one the 20 most common chemicals made in the United States. It can be found in car emissions as well as industrial emissions, and tobacco smoke.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies benzene as a carcinogen of the group 1. Exposure to long-term high levels of benzene can cause leukemia that affects blood-forming cells within the bone marrow. It can also cause DNA damage and cause an increase in white blood cells, which help fight infections.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a form of leukemia that can develop rapidly and can be fatal. Benzene causes this type of leukemia by causing damage to the bone marrow, which results in a deficiency of white blood cells forming. Anemia results that causes the skin to appear pale and tired.

Acute myeloid Leukemia is one type of leukemia caused by benzene. The bone marrow is damaged by benzene, preventing it from producing enough blood cells to supply oxygen to the rest the body. This could cause the bone marrow called myelophthisis to become inflamed.

Camp Lejeune

Due to the strict North Carolina statutes of repose, Camp Lejeune victims had not been able bring civil lawsuits against the Navy for their injuries. After years of lobbying by Veteran advocacy groups, Congress passed a new law that permits Camp Lejeune survivors to sue the Navy for injuries. The new law will provide compensation to those exposed to the contaminated water at the Marine base in North Carolina.

The law allows veterans or their spouses, as well as their children to seek compensation if they are ill or die as a result of the toxic waters at Camp Lejeune. This covers autoimmune diseases, cancers and gastrointestinal issues. Additionally it covers mental health issues and other conditions that arise from the toxic water. The law requires doctors to provide an expert opinion as to whether the victim's illness was caused by exposure to the toxic water at Camp Lejeune.

Monsanto

It is also being accused of causing harm to farmers who claim they have suffered harm due to the firm's strict control of the GM seed supply.

Bayer recently bought the 117-year old company, but it will retain its St. Louis headquarters as well as Roundup. It will continue to research agricultural and biotechnology issues. Monsanto has been criticized for its use and GMO herbicides and crops. Farmers have also expressed their displeasure at Monsanto's strict control of the GM seed industry.

The organization has a history of lawsuits and violations relating to its toxic products. One instance was involving a school groundskeeper who contracted leukemia after spraying Roundup on his property. In a different case an unrelated case, an Canadian farmer was awarded a settlement of $1 million after having sued Monsanto for patent infringement. The company claimed the farmer was cultivating plants that contained its proprietary genetic material, which is prohibited in Canada. The company later settled the lawsuit. The company has been accused of trying to discredit scientists who been witnesses for plaintiffs in Roundup trials. The company's lawyers have contacted universities to ask them to put professors who are serving as experts witnesses in these cases on leave.

Bayer

Bayer is a German pharmaceutical company, was founded in 1863. It began by making synthetic dyes. The company quickly expanded into agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, Blood Cancer Lawsuit and chemicals. It has since acquired a number of companies, including the American company Monsanto and has now three business segments: pharmaceuticals, consumer health, and crop science. Cipro, Adalat, and Aspirin are some of the medicines it is most known for. The company is also involved in children's and environmental concerns.

IG Farben, the parent company, had close ties with the Nazis during the war. They even built an industrial facility at Auschwitz and employed prisoners as slaves. The Allies eventually defeated Germany however, IG Farben split into individual companies which included Bayer. Despite its Nazi past, the company has made no attempt to admit its involvement in the Holocaust or human experiments.

In the US lawsuits filed against Bayer/Monsanto are gaining momentum. The initial batch of Roundup bellwether trials resulted in massive jury verdicts for plaintiffs. In the last week, however a federal court in Texas rejected Bayer's appeal to dismiss the case. This is probably the first instance that such an argument was denied at the district level.

Bayer was also being sued under the False Claims Act for a lawsuit in connection with Trasylol, a cardiovascular drug. Bayer settled the lawsuit for $40 million.
