Parents will tell you that watching their kids grow up is both magical and depressing all at once.
Youth is fleeting, and when it comes to spending time with your kids, every moment matters, including picking the right films to watch. You want to know that for the few precious years you have where your kids think you rock, you've at least had some great moments of just vegging on the couch & having a killer movie night.
But what do you watch? There are so many movies to choose from, and you also have all of the current movies in theaters to consider. In the end, it can be pretty easy to get lost. You could ask your kid for their input, but there's a chance they may not have the same philosophical feeling about this experience.
It may be best to choose a movie that has two qualities: 1) entertainment value; and 2) all the "feels". Don't overthink it too much. There are plenty of films that offer this and so much more. If you're still drawing a blank, here are five movies that should be on your "must-watch" list:
The Muppet Movie - Who doesn't love Kermit the Frog?
The Muppets have been around for decades, which means watching this movie may be the first step in creating a life-long relationship with some of the greatest characters ever.
Toy Story - The feel-good story that brought us memorable characters, familiar voices, and set-up a movie franchise that both taught us about love, loss, and what it means to grow up.
You cannot go wrong with this one.
Beauty and the Beast - This movie set the standard for all animated movies to be taken seriously as it became the first to contend for Best Picture Oscar. Mind you, not the Best Animation...Best Picture.
Only one word can describe it - masterpiece.
The Lion King - A touching movie with some serious elements, most 90s kids will tell you that this is their favorite movie just because it has everything.
The songs are classics, the story is timeless (think Hamlet but happier & with animals), and this movie will be good centuries down the line.
E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial - This is one of the greatest movies ever made and makes all-time lists without even trying.
It's a healthy dose of humor, fun, and drama, and it really takes your emotions on a rollercoaster ride. Just try & get through the ending without shedding a tear.
Over the years, we've built up the age of thirteen as a mythical time when our kids will stop loving us & will turn into little monsters hellbent on independence.
Everyone will tell you that the age that happens is actually about two. So, when you're thinking of the films to watch with your children, don't sweat the idea that you have limited time to enjoy moments like these. Granted, they may not want Mom or Dad trying to "hang" with them, but even they know it's from a good place.
Just make time for your little ones & make a family movie night as fun as possible.
