Eternal Flame
If a flame is burning brightly it fades into darkness.
Many eternal flames are human-created fires that are kept in check and replenished in memorials, but there are also natural eternal flames in nature, like the Eternal Flame Falls at Shale Creek Preserve in western New York. This is small waterfalls that have a grotto at the base that is continuously producing natural gas flammable from the rock.
Scientists are baffled by how this happens, but they suspect the grotto was created because of old, extremely hot bedrock composed of shale. The high temperatures cause carbon molecules in the rock to break down, producing gas. This is the same process that causes coal seam fires and both can endure for hundreds or thousands of years. The New York flame, however is nearly indefinite.
